Overview of the Issue
A Blog is a specialized type of Web Site. The word *Blog* is a
shortened version of the phrase *Web Log* or *Web Journal*. It is a
place for the writer to share thoughts and comments in a casual,
less formal voice. Posts are made fairly frequently and and cover a
variety of topics depending on the purpose and focus of that blog.
Blogging software provides some unique advantages over a
conventional website:
It is fast and easy to set-up
Posts can be made almost as quickly as they can be written
Readers can easily leave comments
The first three points in this list are VERY attractive to Search Engines
A blog hosted with a different URL and in a different location can
help ramp up a static, regular website in the eyes of the Search
Engines
A blog provides an excellent way for a person in a
*personality-driven industry* such as Needlework or Quilting to
reach consumers and build a *marketing brand*
Blogs are designed for easy and efficient networking with other
bloggers and their own blogs
Blogging - Why
Blogs offer some excellent Search Engine strategies that are not
possible with regular, static websites
A blog:
Offers a fast, efficient way to add quality content, WITHOUT having
to wait for your webmaster to take care of it
Can have posts written ahead of time and posted on a planned
schedule
Can easily be tweaked for maximum Search Engine Optimization
Offers easy, built-in ways for surfers to keep up-to-date on
additions to the blog
When a blog is hosted on a different URL/server than the main
website:
It can offer a shortcut to getting the website spidered (indexed by
a Search Engine)
It provides a way to offer INBOUND links to your static web site
There are currently two popular Blogging software packages
available: WordPress and Blogger.
For serious business blogging, the most flexible and desirable
solution is to use WordPress and host it yourself, NOT on the
WordPress website.
